The second time I have skyped into the reading group. This session was less satisfying than the first one. Because both Berit and I skyped in we only did audio. Apparently, the group was bigger and people were further away from the laptop. It was hard to hear the conversation since people were speaking more to the group.

Also, it was only as new people spoke up that I began to get a since of who was in attendance. A couple of voices I didn’t recognize. Since I couldn’t see it was a very much a blind feeling.

Berit and I had our own backchannel chat going that started with our issues of not being able to hear and then progress into our own discussion. So having Berit to chat with made me less incline to stay engaged with the actually reading group.

I didn’t have my headset and just my earbuds. It was interesting how having the mute button on the screen seem more of a barrier than the mute button on my headset. I think there is something to the red icon.

I was not inspired to engaged with the group for a number of reasons:

  • conversation hard to follow due to lack of clarity of audio
  • muting on the screen
  • having another remote person with which to converse

It was quite educational of how removed I felt in this situation. The last reading group, I can video so I could see the room. I will work on some quick prototype of ambient presence for next reading group.

does this work for you pollie?

pollieb 25/03/2011 15:56

I only skimmed the paper prior to the reading group and I have been up for the past 24 hours. So just doing audio is distancing.

25/03/2011 15:56

last week it was better when I could see the video of the people in the room.

25/03/2011 15:56

I was just making notes of the issues of having to feel disconnect.

Berit Greinke 25/03/2011 15:56

yes. have a go if you want, the quality is so bad here that i can’t follow at all

25/03/2011 15:56

and re-connect

pollieb 25/03/2011 15:56

also being muted makes it feel more of a barrier to jump int

25/03/2011 15:57

no. I like just doing the audio . I am testing out the remote user experience.

25/03/2011 15:57

so do re-connect and see if you get a better connection.

25/03/2011 15:57

next time we will make sure you have video view.

25/03/2011 15:58

we do get 100 hours free conference video on skype that will allow both of us to video skype

Berit Greinke 25/03/2011 16:00

i am still connected

pollieb 25/03/2011 16:00

coolio

Berit Greinke 25/03/2011 16:00

pollieb 25/03/2011 16:00

nice to know I am not alone.

Berit Greinke 25/03/2011 16:00

you’re not!

pollieb 25/03/2011 16:00

we should recommend a mic next time to pass around

25/03/2011 16:00

we have enough of them and cords. ;O

Berit Greinke 25/03/2011 16:00

i am feeling a bit cheaky though

pollieb 25/03/2011 16:00

I do feel more like a lurker than participant

Berit Greinke 25/03/2011 16:01

because audio only makes it easy to hide

pollieb 25/03/2011 16:01

and also the two women are remote and it all guys in the room

Berit Greinke 25/03/2011 16:01

oh yes

pollieb 25/03/2011 16:01

yes. and I don’t have much background in the topic.

Berit Greinke 25/03/2011 16:01

instead they’re chatting

pollieb 25/03/2011 16:01

last week both emma and sam were in the room

Berit Greinke 25/03/2011 16:01

25/03/2011 16:01

pollieb 25/03/2011 16:01

Berit Greinke 25/03/2011 16:02

well, i like audio

25/03/2011 16:02

but i still feel somehow excluded

pollieb 25/03/2011 16:02

it is not about like, it is about background knowledge.

25/03/2011 16:02

ahh antenella made it

Berit Greinke 25/03/2011 16:02

thats what i meant, sorry

pollieb 25/03/2011 16:42

should we take bets on if Saul slammed the laptop on both of us…

Berit Greinke 25/03/2011 16:42

he wont

pollieb 25/03/2011 16:42

I think just for fun he will.

Berit Greinke 25/03/2011 16:42

he he

25/03/2011 16:42

maybe we should

pollieb 25/03/2011 16:42

disconnect first?

25/03/2011 16:42

or just scream together

Berit Greinke 25/03/2011 16:42

make a loud noise of a slamming door

pollieb 25/03/2011 16:43

I like screaming

Berit Greinke 25/03/2011 16:43

there is a huge echo here in the hall

25/03/2011 16:43

ha ha

pollieb 25/03/2011 16:43

darn….

25/03/2011 16:43

echo would be even better

Berit Greinke 25/03/2011 16:44

people would be very disturbed if i would start screaming
